Eight years ago, a marriage in one state had to be recognized in all states. It only makes sense that if you are married in Ohio and move to Iowa that your marriage is still legal. It had been true since 1776. That was until Bill Clinton became president. As he left office, he signed a bill saying that a legal gay marriage in one state didn't have to be recognized in another state. The Defense of Marriage Act. Why would Bill sign such a law? The only reason I can think of is that he was protecting his wife's ability to run for office. They didn't want his defense of gay marriage to become an issue in her future campaigns. Obviously Hillary has benefitted a lot in her life from her ability to be legally married. Most straight people I know, aren't aware that Bill signed this act and they are shocked that their hero would do such a thing.
